Dotster

| | $15 domain registration. Highly Highly recommended. The process takes a little longer than at Namesecure or Network Solutions, but we're only talking a few hours here - and at a fraction of the cost and hassle. They have a great domain management area. On the overall I am extremely happy with their service. You only have to change name servers and the DNS settings seem to update quite rapidly. The domain management area is a total snap. If you want to forward your URL to another address they place an ad (and it's a pretty big ad) in a frame. For only $5 a year you can have the name forwarded ad-free. Note that when you use Dotster URL forwarding you can't add any meta tags to the redirect page, so it's not the best place to forward pages in which you are hoping to take advantage of imbedded keywords in the URL (if you don't know about imbedded keywords Go Here [opens in a new window]); however, don't forget that when a page is redirected the robots index the page it's redirected to. If you just want an easier name to direct to a free site you already have, then this is a good bet. This is the best place I found to buy cheap domain names and still get quality service. (Note that we have received at least one complaint about their email forwarding service.) |

I've checked out some of their sample sites and their server seems to be pretty fast. | Domain777
| | | $9.95 for one domain name for one year, or $7.77 each for 100 domain names. Good luck trying to manage the names or renew them later. This is a reseller of Onlinenic.com and together they represent the absolutely worst places to register domains on the internet. In fact, as of July 30, 2003 I personally filed a complaint against both of them with ICANN. If you've already registered names with them, then that's too bad because it's probably too late. |

GoDaddy

| | | $8.95/yr. Obviously a darned-tootin cheap deal indeed. But in the world it is well known that we get what we pay for, and when something's this cheap there's probably a problem somewhere; in terms of this registrar the problem is the slow asp script they run. Plus throughout the process they advertise to you trying to sell you other stuff, which gets confusing because it's difficult tell whether or not half of it is part of the registration process or something else. Extremely annoying! It's difficult to login at the main sites. When you try to manage your domain later, you need a customer ID and password, then when you enter the management area to do anything you need to use a username and password. The domain management area is the same as the name sign-up with the slow asp script. Excessively annoying! Name registration is a little slow as is changing DNS settings. But still, once it's registered and the DNS settings are set and done, it's yours, even if it was a bit of a hassle registering and managing. |

| | Get domains the Instant they expire through a domain name auction. Look for expiring domain names you want at the Starting Line. Decide how much the domain is worth to you, and place your bid! Register.com

| | | High caliber domain name registrar like VeriSign. Top notch. And they have high prices, about $35 for most extensions. They have many other quality services to offer as well. High quality, fast service. |
RegistryWeb

| | Register Discount Domain Names at RegistryWeb. Choose from over 30 domains in 25 countries. Register .COM, .NET domains for US$25 per year using advanced tools to find available domains. Free parking and hosting. |
dotFM

| | Get A Great Sounding Web Address - dotFM, dotAM or dotCD: dotFM ($100 per year with a two-year minimum initial registration), dotAM ($300 for 2 years) or dotCD ($75 a year) domain names. The .FM domain is an Internet country code domain name, just like .JP (for Japan), .MX (for Mexico) or .CA (for Canada). .FM is designated to the Federated States of Micronesia under the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority Domain Name System. BRS Media is an exclusive agent for FSM Telecom for purposes of managing, marketing, and registering FSM Telecom's top level domain, .FM to the broadcasting and internet industries. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a small developing island nation in the Western Pacific Ocean. You can learn a bit more about the Federated States of Micronesia at http://www.fm. Radio stations, individuals and even families (FM for familiy) are using these cool extensions. |
VeriSign

| | Domain Names - $70 domain registration for 2 years. Obviously this isn't a dirt cheap domain name resource, in fact, these guys are the pe-eminent domain name providers. I've included them for comparison. They are the best. When you register here the process is FAST. When you change your DNS settings it seems like it's almost immediate. That's service! They also offer one page sites and URL forwarding packages for about $100 a year. However, once you register with them, don't expect to ever get to go anywhere else. Trying to manage domain names at verisign is a much bigger hassle than at other places. You're better off saving money and getting better management.
|
Name Secure

| | | $25 domain registration (includes parking). The process takes a slightly longer than at Network Solutions, but we're only talking a few minutes here. They have an excellent domain management area. On the overall I am ecstatic with their service. You have to change name servers and numbers but the DNS settings change very fast. For only $35 you can get a 4-page mini-site, and/or URL forwarding with a name grabber which keeps your domain name in a browser window in case your site is actually at a free site. Plus with their URL forwarding you can add meta tags, so this is a good place to get a doorway name where you want to take advantage of imbedded keywords (if you don't know about imbedded keywords Go Here [opens in a new window]). On the overall, it's pretty good service, but kind of pricey when you consider that you can get the same service for $10 less at Dotster. |
One Stop
| | | You can register your domain name here for a measly $11, but I hope you have some time on your hands because it takes from a week to three weeks. It took 3 weeks the last time I registered a name with them; if you're in a hurry, this ain't for you. The wait is a bitch, but you will own the domain name... eventually....They offer a free web site but I couldn't make it happen; in fact, I tried to set up a subdomain site under their domain and that didn't happen either. If I were you, if I bought a name here, I would expect to then have the name hosted elsewhere and not depend on their offer of 10 megs. Unfortunately it gets even worse; when I've changed the DNS settings in their domain manager it took forever, plus their online manager didn't work and I had to call them up on the phone and have them change the DNS manually. You have to do a lot of the work yourself here, thus the low price. It's hard for me even now to believe how much this service sucks. |
